KIGER HISTORY The Kiger mustangs are a consolidation of the best Spanish featured mustangs found in the Oregon area by the BLM back in the seventies. The breed was built around a large group found in the Beaty's Butte area. For many, the history of the Kiger mustang is very romantic! It will take you back to 1977 when the famous Beatty Butte 27 were first discovered, all exhibiting Spanish traits and the dun coloring and markings. Their preservation can be credited to three BLM employees that recognized their uniqueness and Spanish traits, E. "Ron" Harding, BLM Wild Horse Specialist, Willard "Bill" Phillips, BLM Area Mgr, and Chris Vosler, BLM District Mgr. Ron, Bill and Chris worked to set up the original HMA's, where the Kigers would be placed, and became known as Kiger and Riddle. They implemented a plan to manage, protect, and preserve these horses. Only mustangs from those two areas are Kiger mustangs. This amazing discovery is what eventually led to the making of the Kiger mustang breed! Mesteño is one of the original horses captured in the Beatys Butte roundup. His appearance and excellent conformation got him selected as one of the horses to go to the new Kiger HMAs. He went on to be one of the herd sires, serving as a wild foundation stallion for a good amount of the Kiger Mustangs you see today. Mesteño was last seen in 1996, no longer able to keep a band of mares for himself; he would have been in or near his 30's. Fortunately for us, we see a great deal of his strong characteristics passed down through the generations. Mesteño lives on in virtually all Kiger Mustangs. IAKB Are Kigers a Breed? Choosing a reputable Kiger Mustang breeder ensures a purchase that will be the right one. There are certain things that you should always be wary of and we’ve put together this list to remind you of breeding practices and procedures you want to avoid when looking for your own Kiger Mustang. Not included in this directory are Part Blood Kigers unregistered authentic Kigers and horses that trace back to an HMA other than Kiger or Riddle (aka Found Blood, please see the Kiger Horse vs Found Horse info below). If you are a current Kiger owner or if you are buying your first Kiger, registering your horse is a very important aspect of Kiger ownership. Ethical breeders have registered breeding stock and in most cases register their offspring before they are sold. International Kiger Directory The “found horse” is a controversial subject within the Kiger community and it isn’t often understood. We want to make sure that everyone understands the difference and why we’re in support of registering these horses in a different division. As described in the Bureau of Land Management Kiger Mustang brochure, the Kiger mustang is a wild horse with Spanish characteristics managed by the BLM in two special areas in southeastern Oregon. these two areas are known as Kiger and Riddle Mountain Habitat Management Areas (HMA's). With the above definition of the Kiger horse, to be considered a true, full blood Kiger mustang, the horse must either have been adopted from one of these HMA's or their pedigree must trace back to one of these HMA's. When the pedigree does not trace back to one of the above HMA's, but instead it traces back to another HMA, wild herd management area, these are referred to as "found" horses. There was a time that the Kiger Mesteno Association allowed horses from these other wild herd management areas to be registered in their registry as full Kiger mustangs. This became very controversial within the Kiger community and caused tremendous turmoil within the KMA registry. This is when one of the founders of the KMA split off and started the Steens Mountain Kiger Registry. Shortly after this time the KMA halted the allowance of "found" blood to be registered in their registry. However, the already registered "found" horses remained in some breeding programs and the offspring of those found horses continue to be registered today as full blood Kiger mustangs. KHAR clearly identifies these "found" horses by registering them in a separate division called Appendix Division. In addition the registration certificate states the percentage of found blood and the HMA of origin. Other breeds have this type of registration category for horses that are not full blood. Only full blood Kiger mustangs are registered in the KHAR Traditional Division. This transparency was in dire need for the buying public as too many buyers have paid large sums of money for a Kiger that is not a pure Kiger mustang.
